The Nexus is one of the biggest missed opportunities in the history of the WWE, and it is tragic that they did not work out, despite becoming the hottest thing in the business upon debut.

It is clear that the company had big plans for them, and even allowed them to get the better of some of the biggest names in the history of the business, including The Undertaker.

Whenever you attack The Undertaker, it is a huge deal and is remembered for years to come. For some reason though, the Nexus' attack of The Deadman has gotten lost somewhere in the sands of time.

The Origins Of The Nexus

NXT did not start out as the developmental brand that we see today. Instead, the format was that of a game show, in which the rookies were mentored by pros from the WWE main roster and competed against each other in the ring and in challenges.

The winner of the first season was Wade Barrett, who was guaranteed a WWE contract but soon, he would debut on the main roster alongside the seven other rookies from the show, as the leader of The Nexus.

Nexus Attacks John Cena

The group attacked the wrestlers in the ring, everyone at ringside, destroyed the area, and became the most talked about thing in the industry overnight.

It was truly a shocking angle, the likes of which had become rare in wrestling and continue to be to this day. It looked like the WWE had their hands on something special. Unfortunately, they would drop the ball soon.

The Nexus Lost To Team WWE At SummerSlam In Their First Big Match

The initial angle involving The Nexus would culminate at SummerSlam of 2010 when they faced off against seven members from Team WWE in an elimination match.

This is when the company made their biggest mistake with the group, as Team WWE inexplicably came out on top, with John Cena being the sole survivor. In theory, it might make sense for seven bona fide WWE superstars to get the better of seven rookies, but in terms of booking, it was a huge misstep and The Nexus would never recover the momentum that they lost on the night. The company still appeared to have big plans for the group though.

The Nexus Attack The Undertaker On RAW

In a segment that has been weirdly been forgotten over the years, the Nexus actually attacked The Undertaker on the 900th episode of RAW. And not only did they attack The Deadman but left him laying as well.

This was just a couple of weeks after they had lost their huge SummerSlam match and could have brought some momentum back on their side, but it did not. In fact, not many even remember that this moment ever took place.

This is perhaps because it was in the middle of one of The Undertaker's most forgettable and underwhelming runs, as he had lost most of his powers after being attacked by Kane and left in a vegetative state according to the storyline.

The Nexus Help Kane Bury The Undertaker

The second interaction between The Nexus and The Undertaker is better remembered. It was a couple of months after their original attack on The Deadman.

At Bragging Rights, The Undertaker challenged Kane for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Buried Alive Match. By then, he had regained his powers though, and appeared to be on the verge of winning the match, before The Nexus interrupted and helped Kane bury The Undertaker and win the match.

It was the last time that The Undertaker could be considered a regular performer on the roster though and after that, he would only make part-time appearances, mostly at WrestleMania. On the other hand, the storyline with The Nexus led nowhere.

Why Did The Nexus Attack The Undertaker?

This has been one of the biggest mysteries in modern WWE. Exactly why did The Nexus help Kane bury The Undertaker on that night?

The next night on RAW, Barrett would only mention the incident as a mere passing statement, claiming that it was none of the fans' concern and that they had their reasons.

Rumors at the time had suggested though that there had been plans for a feud between The Undertaker and The Nexus, and Barrett could potentially even end up being his opponent at the following year's WrestleMania. Of course, none of that ever happened, as The Nexus would end up losing all momentum they had soon, as the WWE just never pulled the trigger and gave them a defining win that would solidify them as genuine main event players.
