When Was Smackdown Created?

The first episode of Smackdown aired on March 25, 2002. It was the result of a “brand extension” process that saw the WWE roster split into two separate branches. These two weekly programs were intended to compete with each other and recreate some of the passion generated by the Monday Night Wars.

The creation of Smackdown led to the installation of an annual WWE draft wherein stars were selected by either Raw or Smackdown and assigned to perform there exclusively.

While Raw has always been widely considered WWE’s flagship show, Smackdown has had more than its fair share of iconic moments. Several of WWE’s greatest stars made a name for themselves on Smackdown, including Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and John Cena.

Some of WWE’s most notorious matches took place on Smackdown as well. For example, on August 8, 2002, Brock Lesnar decimated Hulk Hogan and cemented his status as a living legend. On November 7, 2017, AJ Styles defeated Jinder Mahal to become the WWE Champion.
